Trey should not DJ, ever. I hear one or more of these four songs every time he is working:
1. Yeah by Usher
2. Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus
3. Cupid Shuffle
4. techno remix of Cotton Eye Joe
If he's not playing one of these songs, he's playing something else obnoxious, for example, Family Force 5.
Not to downplay the importance of excellent coffee, but not many people know how distinguish a good cup from a great cup. The right environment will make your shop thrive. The soundscape is crucial in creating the environment. Trey is butchering the music side of the soundscape. Here are my suggestions:
1. Play the right genre. People generally don't come to coffee shops wanting to hear rap and pop. Sure, it's great to keep things interesting and play something different once in awhile. Or, if you know the customers you have at the moment will enjoy singing along to a song others might find annoying, play one. ONE. For example, if you have a large group of young girls, throw on that Miley Cyrus song.
I'm not saying to keep your music in the realm of the expected. I'd rather you didn't. Your coffee shop will be cliche. But if you're going to put someone in charge who is going to play unexpected music, make sure they're going to play something that will enhance the environment and not drive people away!
2. Play it at the right volume. People come to the Generator talk, read, and study. Even good music can be a bad thing if it's loud enough that one can't concentrate on reading.
3. Watch your audience! A group of older ladies won't want to listen to the same music a group of hipsters would enjoy. As an aside, at no point in time has a group of older ladies wanted to hear sexually explicit rap, TREY.
4. Watch the radio. Be aware what's playing. For example, change stations when a music station starts a music commentary program. It's annoying to have someone talking to you over the radio when you're reading.
